GNU Network Object Model Environment abbrevated as Gnome which is a part of GNU Project, is an desktop enviroment, graphical user interface that runs on top of Operating System. It's intended to make a Linux operating system easy to use for non-programmers and generally corresponds to the Windows desktop interface and its most common set of applications.

Gnome was derived from large volunteer under the Free Software Foundation, a orgarnization founded by Richard Stallman and fellow members. They believed that source code for every software should be Public and open for all, so that other can improve and contribute to the overall software. Gnome was a part of this, to make Linux operating system more user friendly and easy.
GNOME also includes a widget library that programmers can use to develop applications that use the GNOME user interface. In addition to a desktop version, GNOME also comes as a user interface and set of applications for the handheld PalmPilot.
