I don't know why Fedora/Redhat have this default nautilus setting of opening folders in separate windows, but I hate this feature. Well, it could be because I have always worked on a single browser window but even after trying to get used to it, its really hard to work with the default mode. Its sleek but all it does is clutters the desktop. Every command opens a new window - Enter, Backspace; its irritating.
These days, I have to work on CentOS most of the time. I have not used a RedHat based system for almost two years and after installation, when I opened a folder in it and saw the same thing that used to annoy me earlier, I was like, "Eh! not again".
It actually took me a while to figure out the fix. All you have to do is change a small setting in nautilus' preferences. Open Edit->Preferences and click the second tab(behaviour) and check the option Always open in browser windows. The term 'browser' may confuse you here, its just refering to the file browser.
Now, open a folder. You should be able to see the friendly single window mode.

That's some good news. I never even knew that they were called spatial mode. I think being restricted to the idea of limited no. of folders was a decent thought then (around 2004) but everyone is used to navigation now. Its everywhere - mobiles, web etc. Its finally good to see Gnome defaulting to navigational mode.
