Its time for Multi-touch on Ubuntu - uTouch for Unity

I guess most of us would have tried Ubuntu 10.10 aka Maverick Meerkat by now. This version was no doubt going to bring many new things but the one I was really looking forward to is the netbook edition. We have been looking at Shuttleworth's constant efforts to make the netbook edition more usable - Increasing vertical space by using a global menu, using a single panel instead of one, a whole new unity shell interface and a lot others.

Next Gedit release will have a plugin for Collaborative Editing

We have already talked about a web-based collaborative editing tool today, Etherpad. So, after that I started looking for some native linux applications which do the same thing and came across Gobby and a new collaboration plugin for Gedit. We can talk about Gobby sometime later, I am more interested to tell you about this new plugin in Gedit .

Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition will have a Global Menu

Well, the Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life, Mark Shuttleworth, strikes again with his new ideas for Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat. In his blog post, he presented the idea of including global-menu in Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition in order to make the most of the available vertical space in netbooks.

Mark Shuttleworth announced in his blog the mascot for Ubuntu 10.10. Its going to be Maverick Meerkat. As Mark said in his blog, Meerkat are light, social and fast and this is what they are looking forward to in the perfect Ubuntu 10.10.

Designs of the New Ubuntu 10.04 CD boot menu

Recently, I came across a new idea proposed by anzeige on brainstorm to improve the Ubuntu 10.10 CD Boot menu. Well, lets face it, I have been looking at the same CD boot menu for at least last 4 releases. I am sure all of you will be expecting a lot more from Lucid, the next LTS release and I won't mind starting with the Boot menu.

Canonical is NOT developing an Ubuntu Tablet Edition, says Shuttleworth

The man behind Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth, has scratched all the circulating rumours about Canonical working on an Ubuntu Tablet Edition. He said that Ubuntu is all about Servers, Desktops and Netbooks; there are no plans for bringing Ubuntu to a smartphone or Tablet as of now. The rumours were based on an interview with, Chris Kenyon, Canonical's Vice-President of OEM, where he showed company's interest in entering the mobile devices market.

Shotwell and Chromium in, a few changes in the application line up of Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat

After the release of Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, Ubuntu developers are all buckled up for Maverick Meerkat. In the Ubuntu Developer summit, developers have come up with some slight changes in the application line up for Maverick. Replacement of F-Spot with Shotwell and Chromium as default browser in UNE are the major decisions.

Kickass Features that will make Ubuntu 10.10 "the perfect 10"

With the announcement of Ubuntu 10.10's mascot, Maverick Meerkat, Mark Shuttleworth shared his vision to make it a great release. The upcoming Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, being a LTS release, the major focus was on its stability and refinement. In his post, Shuttleworth mentioned his excitement and plans to start experimenting again with Maverick and make it the perfect 10.

Ubuntu 10.10 to be released on 28th October

With around 5 weeks left for the release of Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, the release date of the next version, Ubuntu 10.10, is already available, 28th October 2010. The code name of Ubuntu 10.10 is yet to be announced. As usual, this release will go through 4 alpha, 1 beta and 1 RC before the final release.
